Bru is one of the Tribes in the North Eastern part of India occupying mainly the States of Tripura, Mizoram and Assam. Their population is over 100,000 and the Christian population is about 20%. The Church is growing very fast and the need of translating the Holy Bible into Bru Language is necessary.
In 1959, the Gospels of Mark and John were published using the Bengali script. In 1970, John’s Gospel was printed in Roman script. There was a problem in deciding which script to follow in the translation work. The Bru people prefer the Roman script rather than Bengali Script. The New Testament in Bru language was released in September 1990 using the Roman Script.
Having received the New Testament and felt its impact, the Church submitted a request to the BSI for the Old Testament translation. Their request was fully endorsed by the Tripura Baptist Christian Union and the BSI Aizawl Auxilliary.
The BSI launched this project in June 1993.However, the progress of the project was slowed down by the ethnic clashes in Tripura from 1997 to 2001. Later the project gains momentum and in May 2005 the drafting, keying-in and proof reading was over.
The New Testament was published in 1990, and the Kaubru Bible in 2008
This translation, published by the Bible Society of India, was published in 2008
